Geographical features

The geographical centre of Europe (near Dilove village) is located in Transcarpathian Region of Ukraine (in Ukrainian: Zakapartska Oblast). The region offers a unique geographical position on the south-western slopes of the Carpathian mountains and the north-eastern parts of the Danube plain. Approximately 80% of the region is mountainous. During its historical development the region was under the regulation of different countries - Austrian and Hungarian Empire, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, USSR.

Transcarpathia borders with four foreign countries: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania, among them candidates for the accession to the European Union (EU). The Ukrainian neighbouring regions are Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk.

Peculiar location of the region consists in the fact that the cities of Kosice (the second largest city of Slovak) lies less than 100 km to the West and Budapest (capital of Hungary) lies within 280 km to the Southwest while the Kiev (capital of Ukraine) is located more that 750 km to the East and the nearest large Ukrianian city Lviv - 280 km.
